What Are Scooter Lifts?

What is a scooter lift?

A handicap scooter lift is a mobility device used to lift a scooter, manual wheelchair, or power wheelchair into a vehicle. They differ from “vehicle wheelchair lifts” in the fact that they are built to only lift the user’s powerchair or scooter into the vehicle–not the user themselves. There are scooter lift models for cars, trucks, SUV’s, full size vans, and minivans.

Scooter lifts for cars typically mount in an aftermarket rear hitch or in the trunk of the car.  When selecting a lift for a car that mounts in the trunk, it is important to remember to check that your scooter or powerchair actually fits into the truck.  If it doesn’t, you will likely need a hitch mounted scooter lift.

Scooter lifts for vans and minivans can typically be mounted in the back doors or rear hatch of the vehicle. Minivans and full size vans work well for scooter lifts because there is usually enough interior space to keep the scooter lift inside and out of the elements.  As with car mobility lifts, make sure your mobility device fits into your minivan or full size van.

Scooter lifts for trucks tend to be of a more heavy build because they are often exposed to the elements. A truck scooter lift can ocasionally be mounted under a topper to protect it from the weather.
